Gilbert and Sullivan with a sci-fi twist! Coming to Hornby in 2027, a brand new adaptation of an old favourite.
We are very excited about our next production, which sets the topsy turvy world of Gilbert and Sullivan in the Intergalactic Empire of Titipu. We've swapped faux- Japan for Death Star chic while keeping the sharp wit and engaging music of the original operetta.

Why an Intergalactic Mikado?
Gilbert and Sullivan’s timeless masterpiece has always been a brilliant vehicle for sharp satire, engaging melodies and pure theatrical fun. By launching The Mikado into a vibrant, sci-fi universe, we are leaning into that grand spirit of high frivolity and joyful escapism, whilst avoiding the Japanese caricatures. Our intergalactic setting allows us to play with imaginative costumes, dynamic staging and a fresh sparkling energy that honours the original witty humour while offering our audience a spectacular, out-of-this-world experience. It’s The Mikado you love, but with a cosmic twist!

If you think Gilbert and Sullivan is just stuffy, Victorian and old-fashioned, think again! G&S operettas are already famously witty and comedic - with our Intergalactic Mikado, we have taken one of the iconic pieces and reset it in a new, dynamic setting to add to the fun!
Here is why you should come along and get involved:
Zero-pressure chorus
Terrified of stepping in front of a panel? Don't be! There are absolutely no auditions required to join our chorus. You can come along to rehearsals, find your feet, and just enjoy making a great sound.
Free vocal coaching
You will get to work closely with our fantastic Musical Director, who will guide you through SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) harmony singing. It’s a brilliant, completely free way to improve your vocal technique, learn how to blend with a group, and read ensemble music.
Comedy masterclass
G&S is famous for its fast-paced "patter" songs and sharp, satirical humor. If you love classic comedy, clever wordplay, and large-scale physical storytelling, you will feel right at home.
A showcase for classical singers
For those currently undergoing classical vocal training, G&S bridges the gap between opera and musical theatre beautifully. It provides a rare, low-stakes opportunity to tackle challenging, beautifully written classical scores, gain invaluable experience performing as a principal or ensemble leader, and build your stage stamina.
A great portfolio builder
Gilbert and Sullivan operettas are famous for their large, colourful casts and theatrical flair. If you are a student or amateur building a portfolio in stage makeup, costume design, lighting or set build, our bold sci-fi concept offers a massive, creative playground to showcase your skills and get real production credits on your CV.
